Before inserting a VHS-C tape, check if the VHS-C tape is not programmed. If so, you can reduce belt tension by unwinding the main belt gear ¼ turn (90 degrees).
Try to use only the regular playback function of your VHS player and try to avoid using the fast forward or rewind functions when possible. This will avoid unnecessary tension on your VHS-C cassette tape.
